Shape Your WorldSep26

"You have to let people shape their own world." I think Mike Gotta of the Burton Group is absolutely right about that with regard to RSS. That's the promise of today's new tools for managing information - it allows flexibility and personalization without giving up structure and security.
Let's just highlight these great examples from the CIO article Gotta is quoted in:
Phoenix Technologies uses RSS for legal review. Lawyers at Phoenix know that when something new happens on one of their projects, they will be alerted.
Dykema, a law firm, has an RSS system that allows an attorney to stay on top of work that other attorneys in the firm are performing for his client and the total billable hours.
Jets International, which matches private-plane operators and executives who need a flight, stores real-time data about plane capacity and the travel needs of executives. This data is converted into RSS and sent as a feed to the pilots, who can then customize it after doing a Google search on an executive.
The same article suggests RSS is being used in a business context in two basic ways. First, internally where groups can subscribe to and comment on the same core information (i.e., designers working on a new product) or outside the company to keep partners or customers tuned into things such as order status or leads.
That's quite remarkable what all three of these companies are doing with RSS. It gets one thinking about the different thin slices of information that matter to you.

Brian Mulvaney - September 26, 2006 19:00Brooks: Since you've noted Mike Gotta's take on RSS, it's worth pointing out that he has authored a recent research paper for The Burton Group entitled, "Transforming Communication Channels: RSS Within the Enterprise". This is the first piece from any of the analysts to look at use of RSS and syndicated content as a managed service within the enterprise.
